Types of words we learn
Sight Words:
Words that need to be memorized; students can't use their sounds to read these words.
Pattern Words:
Words that students can use their sounds to spell and decode
Vocabulary Words (2nd and 3rd grade only):
Words that are related to the topics we are learning in reading, science and social studies. Students need to be able to read and know what these words mean.
Fluency
An important skills we practice is oral reading. Fluency means how smooth your child is when he/she is reading sentences and books. Rereading the stories is the best way to increase your child's fluency.
Comprehension
Comprehension is understanding the stories, text, and books we read. We will practice answering comprehension questions with both fiction stories and nonfiction text.
